POLITICAL POSTCARDS

PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION 2006: In November of 2006, the population elected their new president. This postcard is to remind people the importance to start a reflection
and express their thoughts and doubts about the candidates.

MODERN MARIE: In Nicaragua, gender issue is easily mentioned but hardly applied in everyday life. Women are still oppressed. Through the prism of the nicaraguan male society the ideal woman has to be as pure as the Virgin Marie but also mother. Nevertheless, these contradictory facts are simply impossible and no woman can comply with this concept.
With this postcard, I want to underline that “modern maries” too have the right to freely live their sexuality.

FREE TRADE – FAIR TRADE? Workers (mano de obra – “hand of work”) are very cheep personnel in Nicaragua.
At the same time, the Republic of Nicaragua offers free trade zones to attract foreign companies. Although these industries create plenty of job opportunities to the local population, labor conditions are poor and salaries can’t cover basic needs.
Furthermore high productivity pressure and repetitive work processes cause a high number of burn out syndroms and work related illness to workers.
An example of free trade ignoring fair trade.
NEMAGON: In Nicaragua, thousands of ex-banana-plantation-workers are suffering from the consequences of the pesticide NEMAGON. Since years, they are fighting to survive and to get compensation either from the companies, which produced the pesticide or from the owner of the plantations. The time consuming process of compensation purposely slowed down by transnational companies runs against the victims; thus their future turns darker every day.
